SECTION 2

1917 Correspondence

FIVE (5) 1917 LETTERS

The Chapman brothers enlist to fight in World War I.

-- FIVE (5) letters written from Harold William "Bootus" Chapman dated 10 October 1917 to 22 December 1917.

-- One has letterhead from a Cunard liner and four have patriotic US Flags & YMCA letterhead on the stationary.

-- Some of the letters have attached index cards with writing in ink. The cards appear to date from a later period than the original letters.

-- Four of the letters are written home to "Ma" or "Ma & Pa." One letter is addressed to Harold's younger brother "Nug" (Lester Nathaniel Chapman). Lester is also referred to as "Pete" in the Chapman letters.

-- Several of the letters are cut up into pieces by Army censors.

-- The transcriptions that follow are only some of the most interesting excerpts from the full letters.
