GIRL PRAYING IN OLD TINTED ALBUMEN ART PHOTO c1874
Old c1873-74 photograph mounted on thick cardboard 4 ¼ x 5 ½”. This odd-size image appears to be from the transitional era between
the Carte de Visite and the standard cabinet card style of photographs. The photographer & ARTIST is identified on the reverse as
NORVAL H. BUSEY, PHOTOGRAPHIC ART GALLERY 46 N. Charles Street [BALTIMORE, MARYLAND].
Norval H. Busey was born in 1845, in Christiansburg, Virginia. He studied painting with Bouguereau in Paris. Around 1871 he became a
member of the Salmagundi Club in New York, an early important art club that held regular exhibitions and formed a collection.
It was perhaps Busey himself who added the FINE TINTING to this art photo, especially on the girl’s eyes and her lacy outfit.
I believe that Busey’s photographic business was only located on Charles Street in Baltimore in 1873 & 1874.
