OLD 1844 BEDFORD COUNTY VA SLAVE TAX – FOREST WHEAT
Old 1844 printed document (about 5.5 x 6”) filled out in manuscript.
Reads in part:
“Mr. Forest Wheat – 1844 – To the Sheriff of Bedford County”
Wheat was taxed $1.58 on 3 SLAVES & 3 horses.
Document also mentions WATCHES, CLOCKS & PIANOS as taxable items.
Payment received by F.(?) M. Thomas Deputy for Nicholas Robertson, Sheriff.
Document is docketed on reverse “Wheat Forest $4.10”
Left corner is torn off (see scan of front & reverse below). Otherwise good condition on paper of excellent rag content. Quite frame-able.
The Forest Wheat listed in this old document was probably Forest Davis Wheat, who was the son of Zachariah Wheat born in 1769 in Manakin, Goochland Co., Virginia and Edith Chastain, also born in Manakin in 1773. They were married 17 March 1791 in Bedford County and had 10children, 3 sons and 7 daughters.
Forest was born on 18 December 1800 in Bedford and died in August 1864. He married Jane Dooley in 1825. They lived in the Wheat’s Valley area of Bedford County near the Peaks of Otter.
